چکیده

The Organs and Inducements symposium originated from two developments: (1) the large and growing gap between kidney supply and need for people with end-stage renal disease and (2) the failure of recent policy and medical innovations to reverse that trend. The gap between kidney need and supply became visible after the United Network for Organ Sharing data system first went online in 1995 and has been growing ever since. Over the next decade through 2006, transplants increased but the number of patients in need of kidneys grew faster than the supply of kidneys available for transplantation. Since 2006 the need for kidneys has continued to increase, albeit slowly, but the number of suitable kidneys available for transplantation has plateaued, resulting in a still-further widening of the gap. Today, over 7500 patients with end-stage renal disease die each year while awaiting a transplant or become too sick to transplant, while many more languish on the kidney waiting list, which passed 100,000 persons for the first time this year. Although recent advances in kidney transplantation, such as kidney paired donation and nonsimultaneous, extended, altruistic donor (NEAD) chains hold great promise, the number of transplants performed using such techniques remains small and has failed to stem the trend of unmet need. Most of those on the waiting list are on dialysis, a costly and time-consuming procedure that is far less satisfactory than transplantation in sustaining either

Organ Quality as a Complicating Factor in Proposed Systems of Inducements for Organ Donation

All potentially transplantable organs are not created equally. Even among organs currently used for transplantation, there exists a wide spectrum of quality. Donor risk factors can account for as much as a twenty-percent absolute difference in post-transplant survival. Thus, in some cases, actual receipt of a transplant matters less than the quality of organ received. Organ quality might compli...

A positive analysis of financial incentives for cadaveric organ donation.

Financial incentives of various kinds have been suggested to alleviate the chronic shortage of transplantable organs in the United States. This paper analyzes the possible consequences of financial incentives on organ supply. We show that under current practice and current law (which are not the same), inducements to donate organs or to register as an organ donor may lead to a decline in the su...

Giving until it hurts: prisoners are not the answer to the national organ shortage.

This Note argues that prisoners, whether executed or living, should not become organ donors. The introduction acknowledges the shortage of transplantable organs in the United States and the steps that have been taken to ameliorate the crisis. Part I discusses the procurement of organs from executed prisoners, beginning with a brief examination of China, a country where this type of procurement ...

Conditional advice and inducements: are readers sensitive to implicit speech acts during comprehension?

Conditionals can implicitly convey a range of speech acts including promises, tips, threats and warnings. These are traditionally divided into the broader categories of advice (tips and warnings) and inducements (promises and threats). One consequence of this distinction is that speech acts from within the same category should be harder to differentiate than those from different categories. We ...

Environment-Driven Social Force Model: Lévy Walk Pattern in Collective Behavior

Animals in social foraging not only present the ordered and aggregated group movement but also the individual movement patterns of Lévy walks that are characterized as the power-law frequency distribution of flight lengths. The environment and the conspecific effects between group members are two fundamental inducements to the collective behavior. However, most previous models emphasize one of ...
